Spring Cleaning: Wardrobe Detox

Spring Cleaning: Wardrobe Detox

As the snow begins to melt and the breeze becomes a little softer, we can feel that wonderful season on its way - SPRING! In other words, it’s time for a damn good clear out.

We have all, at some point, been guilty of holding on to things in our wardrobe for far too long. We become attached to a favourite jumper and we wear shoes until they fall apart completely. We buy something on a whim and then refuse to part with it because it cost quite a lot or in the vain hope that it might come in useful one day. We’re scared of throwing out anything.

Out With The Old, In With The New

You have built up your collection of pieces over many months (or years), you have spent no small amount of money on it and clothes are quite an important part in making sure nobody thinks you’re wearing the same outfit day in, day out. Take your time while going through your wardrobe detox and follow these procedures to make is easier to decide.

The Process

Choose an afternoon where you won't be disturbed. Put on some music and wear comfortable clothes that are easy to take on and off.

Start working your way through your wardrobe, trying on each item as you go. You want to create three piles of clothes: one pile for items you are throwing out/donating to charity/ friends, one for items that you are keeping and one for items you're not sure about.

Try on each item and ask yourself the following questions: does it suit you? Have you worn it at all in the last six months? Are you keeping it because it was expensive or a present? The only clothes you should keep are the ones that really suit you - be honest.

Good reasons for throwing clothes out:

They are old and worn

They no longer fit you

You've never worn them

You don't feel good in them

The transition from autumn/winter to spring/summer is the perfect time to have a good clear out. Having to change the way you dress gives you a great opportunity to evaluate what you do and don’t need in your wardrobe. You can see clearly what you have and haven’t worn, and it’s always nice to make room for new things. Another tip is if you have an open wardrobe, color coordinating your closet will feel less cluttered.

Take your time, be considerate but don’t be afraid to be strict with yourself. Make intelligent choices and both your wallet and your style will be much happier. The wardrobe spring clean is an essential part of the modern man’s style development; embrace it and make it work for you.
